Biography
He has accomplished over 500 portraits in the United States including those of prominent businessmen, surgeons and civic leaders. These included Dr. Denton Cooley, the internationally- reputed heart surgeon of Texas Heart Institute, Dr. Henry Seidel, the Dean of Students at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, former U.S. Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, and John Malone, the CEO of Telecommunications Inc. (TCI). The National Republican Party selected Suh to paint a portrait of President Ronald Reagan. Limited editions of this portrait were used during the 1984 presidential campaign. He was also commissioned to do a dual portrait of President Reagan and Soviet Premier Gorbachev, commemorating the 1985 summit meeting in Geneva, which received world-wide publicity through UPI. In 1988 one of Suh's portraits was selected as the Best Oil Portrait of the Show (Tom Picard Award) at the Members' Show of Salmagundi Club, the oldest artists club in America. He also received the Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, and Frank Van Steen Memorial Award from the Hudson Valley Art Association in 1996. John Suh is a member of the Society of Illustrators of New York City, and was a distinguished faculty member of Colorado Institute of Art 1990-1995.
